Problem Statement Addressed by Triage-SOS ™

Globally, the incidence of sudden death among young adults had been estimated to be about 0.8-6.2 per 100,000/year. Cardiovascular causes, including arrhythmia, myocardial ischaemia, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, aortic aneurysm and valvular diseases, are the most commonly reported causes of such deaths. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in excess mortality and studies have documented the same in certain age groups increased risk of stroke, cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. 

An estimated 17.9 million people died from Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and stroke.

Most of these deaths occur at home and only 1 out of 10 patients reaches an appropriate health facility for treatment on time, which is the “first golden period” after the onset of symptoms of these life-threatening diseases. About 55 per cent of the cardiac/stroke deaths reported in India are due to delay in seeking care, according to the first community-based study published in the journal. Out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality among adults, accounting for millions of deaths worldwide.

Incidence of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) among youngsters are rising due to sedentary lifestyles, diabetes, increasing consumption of alcohol, smoking and hypertension. Some patients, however, may not have any known risk factor. Most people who are indulged in a sedentary lifestyle that involves incessant smoking, drugs, drinking too much alcohol, obesity, lack of a balanced diet, irregular sleep cycles and being involved in a high stress work environment. These factors can increase the risk of having a sudden cardiac arrest or can lead to other medical conditions and complications too. People who have had a family history of heart diseases and diabetes may also have high chances of suffering from SCA. In India, it is estimated that about 5-6 lakh people die every year due to sudden cardiac death (SCD), and a good proportion of them are under the age of 50.

It’s widely recognized that diabetes, or elevated blood sugar levels, correlates with an increased risk of heart attacks. India holds the unfortunate distinction of being dubbed the diabetes capital of the world, with approximately 77 million individuals over the age of 18 diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Much of this prevalence is exacerbated by sedentary habits, consumption of spicy, oily foods, and excessive sweets, among other factors.
